Identifying and treating Koi diseases

If your Koi fish don't seem as happy and lively as before, check to make sure they don't have any Koi diseases.

They say a diseases fish is probably a stressed fish. Koi fish are no exception to this rule and it is most likely your koi diseases are stemming from high stress. The main proponents of stress in Koi fish are high ammonia and low oxygen levels in the water, erratic water temperatures, crowding, and parasites. When a fish experiences too many of these factors for too long, they become much more susceptible to disease.

Koi diseases can be categorized into four categories: bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic. Bacterial diseases include fin and tail rot and hole-in-the-side. Bacterial diseases usually eat away at the skin and leave the fish vulnerable to more diseases. The hole-in-the-side disease appears to have scales stand on end and eventually fall off. The skin that was protected by the scales then begin to peel and leaves the fish looking as if it has a gapping hole in its body. Parasitic Koi diseases are probably the most dangerous and should be treated right away. Parasitic diseases include fish lice, gill maggots, and anchor worm.

If you properly care for your Koi fish and their environment, most Koi diseases can be avoided. However, there are instances of fish developing diseases even in the cleanest environments. In these instances, you should treat your Koi with the proper treatment and keep it from spreading to other fish.
