Koi Fish Home > Koi Filters Keeping your water clean with Koi filtersKoi filters provide the clean water that your Koi fish demands. It's an obvious fact that Koi need clean water in conjunction with a clean pond. So how do you keep your pond water clean? koi filters Many beginning Koi keepers will assume that swimming pool pumps and filters will work just fine on a Koi pond. However, this is not the case. Koi filters will require 24 hour usage so if you were to use a pool pump, your electricity will would be through the roof! Another thing to consider is that pump filtration might not even be the best option for you. Koi filters should vary in operation and design according to the characteristics of your pond. For example, for smaller ponds with few fish, small pump style filters may work and be efficient. However, as your pond gets larger and the fish grow in number, pump filters won't be able to keep up. The main concern in Koi filters is removing biological waste before it decomposes and releases ammonia. This objective is hardest to achieve with pump style filters because these filters are designed to suck in water from a small area in your pond. Due to this, the filters aren't able to pick up much of the waste lying around in the bottom of your pond. And as the pond gets larger, this task becomes even harder. The recommended Koi filter for bigger ponds with large number of fish is the gravity fed filter which takes in dirty water by pumping out clean water. This allows for a natural gravitational cycle in the pond water and picks up most solid wastes that have settled to the bottom. Although this type of Koi filter is more expensive and a little more complicated to install, once you see the clean water your Koi swims in, it'll all be worth it. Koi Filters
